Saving and Page Titles

The page title is what shows in the bar at the top of the browser window.  In the case of the apge you are looking at now, the title is: "(FrontPage 2000) Part 4: Saving and page titles."  Look at the top of the screen for what I am talking about.

Saving Files

When you save a file in FrontPage, you have the opportunity to set the title at the same time.  Let's save our first page.

Use the menu: File-Save As...

Notice that you can change the name of the file here.  Make sure that this first page is called index.htm.  This is very important.  (Click here for geeky explanation of why this is so important.)

Click the button marked "change"

Change the page title to something more appropriate, like "Welcome to (Your company name here)" and then click "OK".

Click "Save."  If FrontPage 2000 warns you that you are overwriting another file, that is fine for this time.

There.  That's your home page.

Not very exciting, is it?  Well, it will get better, you have to trust me on this one.

Part 3Part 5

GEEK TALK:

Why is it so important that the file be labeled "index.htm"?  Well, this is the WWW naming convention for home pages - the page that acts as the "doorway" to a web site.  All home pages are called "index.htm".  When you go to Yahoo, for instance, you type in "www.yahoo.com" but you are going to "www.yahoo.com/index.htm" .  Try typing the whole thing in some time (or clicking that handy link I just made) to see what I mean.
