Make Another Page!

Well, we are going to need another page to move on to navigation, so let's make another page and then add a picture to it.

Click on the button to create a new blank page.

Here, I'll tell you a practice that I always follow - I immediately save and title the file.  (see part 4)  In this case, let's call the file "mission.htm" and title it "Mission Statement".  (Can't go wrong with a mission statement, right?)

Type in "Mission Statement" and apply the Heading #2 style (see part 3)
Press Enter.
Type in the company (committee, department, etc.) mission statement

Now, let's add some flare...

Adding A Clip Art graphic

Right Click on the picture and choose "picture properties" from the pop up menu.
Position your cursor back to the beginning of the mission statement by using your mouse and clicking before the first letter of the first word.
Use the menu: Insert-Picture-Clip Art
Choose clip art that is appropriate for the look of your site's theme and insert it into the document.
Right Click on the picture and choose "picture properties" from the pop up menu.
Click on the appearance tab and change the alignment to "left."
Click "OK"

You will see that the text now wraps around the graphic.  Experiment with the different alignments to see which you like best.

A Note About Clip Art...

Because we used clip art, FrontPage is going to need to create a web graphic.  When you go to save the file, FrontPage will present you with a dialog box that looks like this:

Don't let it throw you, just hit "OK".  (And then click here for the geek explanation of what's happening here.)

Resizing a graphic

If you want to adjust the size of a graphic,

Click on the graphic.

The black boxes that appear around the picture are called "resize handles."

Adjust the size by clicking on a corner resize handle and dragging it toward the picture to reduce it or away from the center to enlarge it.

Using the corner resize handle keeps the graphic in proportion.  If you want to stretch the graphic, use one of the resize handles on the sides.

About using your own image files

Often, you will want to use custom images, like a .gif or .jpg created in PhotoShop, or perhaps an image you saved from another web site.  In a case like this, the instructions for inserting the image are similar to those for inserting clip art.

Use Windows Explorer to copy your images into the folder a:\images.  (This is where FrontPage will look for images for your web).
Use the menu Insert-Picture-From File
Click on the image you want to use.  You will see it previewed on the right side of the screen.
Click "OK"

If you haven't already, save the page.  We're about to go from having two pages to having a web site!

Geek Talk:

Clip Art generally comes in the file format .wmf ("Windows Meta File).  This file is not generally supported by Web browsers, so FrontPage needs to convert the image you want to include into a different file format.  In most cases, FrontPage will convert clip art into a .gif.
