Shared BordersOne of the reasons that professional web pages look so good is because of the use of similar elements. If you go to a search engine like www.lycos.com, for instance, you will notice that the top of the page always has the search box and links to other Lycos services. The bottom of the page always has their copyright notices and their terms of use. How do these people keep on top of this, changing every page in the site every time they add a service? Well, they don't. Professionals use something called a "virtual include" to import another page's contents into the current page. FrontPage has a similar function for this purpose called "Shared Borders." (It also has virtual includes, but that's a story for another time...) We are going to use FrontPage's Shared Borders function to manage our navigation links and to give our pages a consistent look.
A dialog box like the one shown above will open.
You page should now have taken on a very different look. We're halfway there. Now, we just need to tweak the navigation and we're home free... |
